Learning how to save water at home is a simple way to reduce waste, lower household costs and contribute to a more sustainable use of natural resources. Small changes in daily habits can help you save water throughout the year and make a meaningful difference in your household consumption.
1. Take shorter showers
A 10-minute shower can use around 200 litres of water. Reducing shower time by just a few minutes is one of the easiest ways to save water every day.
2. Turn off the tap while brushing your teeth or washing your hands
Avoid leaving water running unnecessarily. Use a glass of water when brushing your teeth and turn off the tap while soaping your hands.
3. Defrost food in advance
Whenever possible, defrost food in the fridge or at room temperature instead of using running tap water to speed up the process.
4. Reuse cooking water
Water used to cook vegetables, meat or other foods can often be reused as a base for soups, broths or other recipes.
5. Choose more efficient appliances
Efficient washing machines and dishwashers help reduce both water and electricity consumption, benefiting the environment and the household budget.
6. Turn off the tap while washing dishes by hand
If you wash dishes manually, fill the sink or a basin and only use running water when you need to rinse.
7. Use the toilet responsibly
Avoid using the toilet as a bin. Wipes, cotton buds and other waste should be thrown in the bin, not flushed.
8. Reuse water from daily activities
Water used to wash food, or the cold water that runs before the shower heats up, can be reused for watering plants, cleaning floors or other household tasks.
9. Water plants and gardens later in the day
Watering at night or early in the morning reduces evaporation and helps plants absorb water more effectively.
10. Wash your car with a bucket and sponge
Avoid leaving the hose running while washing your car. Using a bucket and sponge can save a significant amount of water.
11. Install water-saving devices
Flow reducers, efficient taps and dual-flush toilets help control water consumption without reducing comfort.
12. Repair leaks in taps, pipes and toilets
A dripping tap can waste thousands of litres of water per year. Check for leaks regularly and fix small issues as soon as possible.
